What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to health and is a modality that encompasses many aspects of a patient’s health. A strong focus is placed on addressing the underlying cause of your condition and providing not only symptomatic relief but aiming for sustainable therapeutic outcomes. Osteopathic treatment typically is “hands on” and addresses both the muscles and joints of the body.
Osteopaths undertake a minimum of 5 years of tertiary education and graduate with a Bachelor and Master’s degree.
The national AHPRA board regulates Osteopathy. This means registered Osteopaths must abide by a set code of clinical practice including using an evidence informed approach to treatment and are mandated to complete regular professional development. Current research suggests that a multi-modal approach (eg: manipulative therapy, exercise and education) provides better outcomes than a single therapy approach.
Osteopathic treatment uses this multi-modal focus with the ‘hands on’ approach being accompanied by exercise instruction and rehabilitation regimes, appropriate use of medication, ergonomic advice, dietary modification and counselling when necessary.
